​Dry ice is the ideal medium to refrigerate pharmaceutical products or frozen foods during transport.

Application scope

Dry ice is used to maintain the cold chain during the transport of pharmaceuticals (medical equipment, tests, kits, research material) or food (frozen products, home deliveries of frozen food…).

Requirements

IJsfabriek Strombeek provides dry ice in the form of pellets in different packages: polystyrene boxes, plastic bags or insulated containers. We also offer dry ice-discs that are individually wrapped.

With the use of dry ice, it is important to wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and to follow the safety rules on the packaging. Dry ice can indeed cause burns when touching it.

Casestudy

A client wondered if he could transport his food containers for 12 hours and keep them cool at a temperature of -18°C. Hereafter we have started to carry out tests so we could calculate how many kilograms of dry ice was necessary to maintain the temperature at -18°C for 12hrs. As it shows below, the x-axis stands as the temperature measurements and the y-axis stand as the time. This investigation showed packaging No. 3 of 1 kg to be the best.
